Hello, so back in 2009 I lived in Georgia and lost my job and failed to find work that paid as well so I ended up having to break my lease and move out of state. After reading a post about unclaimed property here I did a search for myself here and in Georgia. I found a small amount of money due to me from a security deposit. My question is if I request this money from the state of Georgia could my former landlord use my information then sue me for the lost rent? She called me several times after I left for a forwarding address which I never provided. Given that I moved out halfway through my lease I'm not entitled to any deposit refund right? Again I broke the lease in 2009 and left the state for good. Am I good as far as the statute of limitations? (I did try to Google this but couldn't find a clear answer) This money was not given to unclaimed property until 2013, is that unusual?
