Car Rental Rome Italy

My partner and I visited central Italy in April 2019 for 11 days, spending time in Cinque Terre, Florence, Siena, Rome, and Vatican City. It was a great trip, with a mix of beautiful sites and delicious food. Our style is to explore by foot with an interest in overall scenery (architecture, art, nature), food, and getting a sense of what local life is like. It was a very memorable trip. You can find the full itinerary, and customize it, here. Below is a summary of the trip. The total cost was $2, 579 for the two of us. That breakdown was approximately: Flights: $815 Food: $650 (1-2 meals/day were grocery-based) Transit: $190 (trains, rental car, metro) Housing: $696 (Airbnbs) Fun: $210 (museums, tours) Miscellaneous: $18 (luggage storage) Daily cost = $235 or $117. 50/day per person Cinque Terre consists of five colorful coastal towns: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare. This was a very scenic part of our trip. Each town is very walkable, though not always wheelchair accessible.

Car rental vs train for 2 people in Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice) : travel

Thanks:)

An interesting observation about restaurants (from previous trips) – if you want to eat tasty, there is little chance to find a decent place in the tourist area. Basically, places of mass tourism serve reheated processed foods (like Bolognese sauce from a can over overcooked spaghetti), pizza or focaccia are not always so good. And it makes sense – in the cities, crowded with tourists, in places of their congestion there is no sense to try –people come and go, and noone cares if you do not enjoy the food… To eat something decent, we used TripAdvisor rating, however, often had to book in advance, everything is busy everywhere. The funny thing is that the cost of the dishes will be roughly the same- whether it is a touristy place, or a "gourmet" restaurant, the question is only in the quality of food. A funny thing happened about the shopping trip. On this trip to Rome we did not rent a car, because we did not plan to travel outside of Rome. Although the offers of rental cars at this time were really good, thanks to the aggregator Booking Car.

In error, they activated the SIM card even though I told them the trip was cancelled. In response, they apologized and will send me a new one free of charge for my September trip(nice of them). So it looks like I am getting credits/refunds for everything except the Colosseum tour (keeping my fingers crossed on this one).

We were lucky with the hotel – it had heating, but our friends were not as lucky and, complained that it was impossible to feel warm in the room, and the hotel management ignored all the complains saying "we are in a Southern country, it's warm here". The whole trip was planned for a couple of days during the New year week, but we did not expect the trick with the celebration of the New year's eve itself. Already on the spot we started calling all the popular places in the around based on TripAdvisor rating, and, to our surprise, all of them were fully booked for New Year's eve. The only places that had tables available were Michelin restaurants, where the cost of the menu for one person reached thousands of euros. So we found an excellent solution at a neighboring hotel that offered entertainment and an impressive menu at a decent price. We did not regret for a minute – live music, delicious food for a few hours and free flowing Pinot Grigio made our night. As we have already taken guided tours in our past visits to Rome, this time we have "quickly run" through the landmarks – the Coliseum, the Pantheon, the Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain and other charms, just to refresh the memory.

However, we do come back to Rome for 2 nights at the end of our trip, during which time we'd be using the trains. Alternatively, we can buy 2 adult country train passes for 5 days use for $368 together, or 6 days for $422. We'd also have to pay for reservations on some trains (probably another $40-50) As I see it, the pros to driving are greater flexibility of our schedule, ability to visit more place, and take our time a bit. Cons include driving in Italy, potential to get horrifyingly lost, and not being able to just relax on the train. We'd only be driving in Rome as much as it would take us to get out of Rome, so that's not a big concern. Anyone have experience driving in Italy? Would you recommend it? It seems to me like renting a car would save us money overall, but I don't have a sense for whether that's something that should make me say, "Awesome! Better way to see the country AND we get to save money! " or "Well, it's a pain but it will save us $100.. "

On Sundays, many petrol stations are not attended but machines can be paid with credit card. If you pay with cash, make sure you fill up with an exact amount, i. e. €20, €30, etc., as the machines often don't give change. Unless your hotel has a parking space included, it is not wise to attempt finding a parking space in the city, as they are hard to find and are often reserved for locals. Choose a P+R outside the center and close to a metro station, such as the P+R Batistini, P+R Valle Aurelio, or the P+R Laurentina. With only around €2 ($2. 25) per 12 hours, they are also a priceworthy option. Parking lots close to the Old Town are also a possibility, but, with a rate of up to €40 ($45) per day, are a rather expensive solution.
